FREEDOM Trial Sets Gold Standard for Treatment of Diabetics with Multivessel DiseaseThis was a multicenter, multinational, randomized trial comparing the effectiveness of percutaneous coronary interventions using drug-eluting stents (PCI/DES) compared to standard therapy of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in diabetics with multivessel coronary artery disease. The primary endpoint was a composite of death, stroke, or myocardial infarction. The trial enrolled 1,900 adults from 140 sites in 17 countries with median follow-up of 3.8 years. FREEDOM was supported by NIH grants HL071988 and HL092989 (FREEDOM ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00086450).
