Qualitative Research
Qualitative Data Collection, Analysis, & Manuscript Preparation
NERI appreciates the importance of qualitative research methodologies in modern science and has extensive experience with qualitative and mixed methods research. To date, NERI has conducted more than 40 qualitative research studies on diverse topics. Recent examples range from physician decision-making to how people understand symptoms and decide to seek medical care.
This work is supported by government agencies and private sponsors through NERI investigator awards as well as subcontracts with other organizations. Deliverable products include proposal and protocol development, short and comprehensive reports (e.g., to inform quantitative studies or media products), and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
NERI’s Center for Qualitative Research has the capacity to carry out qualitative studies from inception to completion. Center staff are trained in various qualitative data collection techniques, including:
- Open-ended or semi-structured interviews (in–person or by telephone)
- Cognitive debriefing interviews
- Focus groups
- Archival research
Center staff use a variety of systematic approaches to qualitative analysis, including thematic analyses and narrative analysis.
